Brief Thoughts: Wings of Desire (1987)

wings-of-desire

First viewing of Wim Wenders’ WINGS OF DESIRE; a poem of a movie that makes of its audience angels bearing witness to humanity, before bringing them back down to Earth with an embrace and a shared chalice. How remarkable. I absolutely adore narratives of immortals walking the cities of the Earth and reflecting on the passage of time and the fallible, self-destructive strangeness of humanity, and WINGS OF DESIRE joins my favourites of the sub-genre. Also, I had no idea Peter Falk and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds were in it (!), and that was a very pleasant surprise.

And how lovely is Bruno Ganz’s (RIP) little smile when he glances at the humans that can’t see him? Perfectly angelic.
